Halloween at Las Artes Glendale

Las Artes Glendale had its annual Halloween party on Wednesday.  We had an awesome potluck, watched some scary movies, and gave out prizes for the awesome costumes that our students (and staff) came up with!

New Art at Las Artes

The students at Las Artes Glendale are producing some great pieces.  Right now, various students are working on mosaic pieces, on canvas, and on prints.  Here are some of the pieces that are in our Art Room right now:

Painting by Danny Wengel

Painting by Rachel Phillips (in progress)

Painting by Debora Fuentes and Marcus Pennington (in progress)

Painting by Raquel Lopez (in progress)

 Tile by Marcus Apodaca

Painting by Joseph Brehm (in progress)

Tile by Desiree Utterbeck (in progress)
Painting by Andrew Ramirez

Painting by John Hirko

In addition to working on their own pieces, sometimes students are given instruction on art history, and the art of particular cultures.  Artist Martin Moreno often asks students to explore their own culture through art.  Martin is currently working on a piece for Dia de los Muertos (below).

Windy Weather

I'm sure that many of you in the Maryvale area experienced the crazy weather that we had on Tuesday, October 5th.  The students and teachers of Las Artes were at lunch when the storm hit, and we had a great time hanging out together in front of the school.  That is, until the hail started:

For a period of perhaps 20 minutes, Las Artes was inundated with a torrent of rain, wind, and 1/2 inch diameter hailstones!  Several staff and student cars were dented, and we had to lock the doors to prevent them from being blown open!  Needless to say, the students were a little distracted in the afternoon, but they still did well in their classes, with the gentle guidance of the staff, of course :)
